What are we to make of the verse from Srimad Bhagwatam often quoted by traditionalist scholars of the Mahabharata which is SB: 12:2:33 given below
(In context of Mahabharata Shalya Parva verse clearly stating that Kaliyuga has already pierced/ already arrived at time of the Mahabharata war “Praptam Kaliyugam Viddhi”?
Many will ask what the confusion/controversy is? To bring readers up to date, there is a verse (among at least 11 other references from the Mahabharata text, kindly see chapter 1 of my first book: 3067BCE) from Shalya Parva at the time of the Gadayuddha which is given below : This verse says clearly“Praaptam Kaliyugam viddhi Pratignyam Pandavasya cha” which means that Kaliyuga has already PIERCED, that Kaliyuga has already arrived and that’s simply because the the oath of the Pandavas had to be fulfilled. The Inference is clear.
Kaliyuga has definitely arrived at time of Gadayuddha/Mahabharata!
Thus the traditional scholars have taken the SB verse and ignored the internal evidence of the Mahabharata text stating that Kaliyuga was already on at time of the Gadayuddha! BUT for the sake of readers, let’s check the evidence and look at the translation of that verse from Srimad Bhagwatam: SB: 12:2:33
Check the meaning given in the translation itself!
It says “The INFLUENCE of the age of Kali has begun”
It does NOT say “Kaliyuga has begun”
The difference is that as long as Sri Krishna is on earth, the influence of Kaliyuga is kept at bay… (Thus we can see that no contradiction exists). Here is the translation:
Conclusion: Thus we should carefully consider the verses Shalya Parva 59:21CE (and many others from Mahabharata stating Kaliyuga had already arrived at time of the Mahabharata war) and also the verse from Srimad Bhagwatam ie. SB: 12:2:33
We can clearly see that there is no contradiction or controversy at all between SB 12:2:33 and MBH Shalya Parva!
Both are agreeing that Kaliyuga had arrived at time of the Mahabharata and its influence is not able to exert fully till Krishna departs.
This debunks all the so called “traditional dates of the Mahabharata war”… and there are 5 contenders for it: 3137/3138/3139/3140/3143BCE all of whom wrongly assume that Sri Krishna left at Kaliyuga (which by their inference is 3102BCE or -3101) when the Mahabharata text itself has many references pointing out that Kaliyuga was on during the war! Thus we see that the war must have taken place in the 50-100 years after Kaliyuga only and at that point a simple search for Saturn at Aldebaran/Rohini with a Mars retrograde motion and the two eclipses: Lunar eclipse at Plaiedes/Kartika Purnima followed by a solar Eclipse at Antares/Jyestha will give the year of the war just as easily!
If we assume as some Mahabharata writers have (wrongly) assumed that Kaliyuga must arrive on a Pushya Nakshatra day which must be within the 18 days of the Mahabharata war (which is not the correct inference but nevertheless)… even then it must fit with Shravana nakshatra being last war day. In that case, Kaliyuga would arrive on Nov 28 3067BCE! (However we don’t believe that Kaliyuga arrives on a Pushya Nakshatra day as the reference quoted simply says that the age is of Tishya. It does not explicitly say that Kaliyuga arrives on a Pushya Nakshatra day and our date of Kaliyuga remains 3102BCE)
The mistaken assumptions by traditional researchers are given below:
- Assumption that Krishna left at Kaliyuga
- Assumption that the Mahabharata war occurred 35/35 years before Kaliyuga
Both find NO proof in the Mahabharata text which gives the EXACT opposite Shabda Pramana: ie. the text says that the great war started after the start of Kaliyuga.
- Gandhari’s shraapa causes Sri Krishna to leave at Kaliyuga (text of Mahabharata does not state this)
